‘Another Name Goes Down’

“Collège Ahuntsic has decided to abandon its sports team name, the ‘indiens’, along with its logo featuring a caricature of an ‘indigenous’ {They mean ‘aboriginal’} man wearing a feathered headdress. Teams at the French-language public CEGEP in Montreal have been known as the ‘indiens’ since the school’s founding, more than 50 years ago

“The administration is following the example of McGill University, which decided to move away from the men’s varsity team name, the ‘Redmen’, last year.
{See below…}

“A new name for the college’s 14 sports teams will be selected by December, according to Nathalie Vallée, the school’s executive director. A new logo will follow in the winter semester. Vallée said the school was changing its team name and logo as a result of a ‘sensitization project’ it undertook last year.

Of 10,000 students at Collège Ahuntsic, about 50 people self-identify as ‘indigenous’.

“The administration has created an action plan for the school’s approach to ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} issues. It’s begun organizing cultural activities, workshops in one of Quebec’s ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} languages, ‘Atikamekw’, and it hopes to create a scholarship for ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} students.

“The school will consult with members of its community and with its sports teams to choose the new name.

All options are on the table“,
said Vallée.”

CBC News, Oct. 17, 2019

“Montreal’s McGill University has announced it will change the name of its men’s varsity sports teams — the Redmen — after {some} ‘indigenous’ {They mean ‘aboriginal’} students, faculty and staff said the name is discriminatory.

Not everyone is happy about the name change
“Salim Brahimi is a McGill graduate who was on the soccer team before graduating in 1989, and coached the men’s soccer team until 2004.

It comes to a case of an easy target for the sake of political correctness, without really making an impactful change on the ground“,
he said.
Some people are going to feel good about this, but did it do anything without alienating a whole part of the community?

“He said he would have preferred if energy had been spent on “a very concrete cause” that advanced truth and reconciliation.

That would have been a lot better than the way it happened“,
said Brahimi.
This was just, you know, an easy step for people in the decision-making seat.”

“He said the name is different from other sports teams’ names and mascotry that have been debated, such as the Washington Redskins and Edmonton Eskimos.

In those cases, clearly, those names have ‘indigenous’ {He means ‘aboriginal’} connotations“,
Brahimi said.
It’s not what we’re talking here. This is a different [situation].”

“Suzanne Fortier, the principal and vice-chancellor of McGill, announced the decision by email to students Friday morning, saying it was based on new principles of commemoration and ‘renaming’ that the university established in December, 2018… She said that a steering committee would be set up to determine a new name for the teams through consultation…

“A spokesperson for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the PMO supports McGill’s decision.

All Canadians have a role to play in achieving reconciliation. It is an issue that we must all address in real and concrete ways“,
said press secretary Matt Pascuzzo in an emailed statement.
We commend actions taken by institutions and communities across Canada to advance reconciliation, including the implementation of the {Partial} Truth and ‘Reconciliation’ Commission ‘Calls to Action’.”

“The university’s task force on ‘Indigenous’ {They meant ‘aboriginal’. It’s ridiculous that universities would use wrong terminology simply in order to be politically correct and ‘not offend’…} studies and ‘indigenous’ education released a report in 2017 in response to the {Partial} Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.
{A flawed and propagandistic report that has been uncritically accepted by educational institutions across Canada…}

“The task force issued its own recommendations, including one to change the varsity teams’ name within one or two years of the report…

“The deliberately provocative intent was to make a mascot of ‘white’ people for a change, and see how they liked it. But ‘white’ people did like it. Instead of taking offence, ‘whites’ embraced the name, to the extent of creating a huge demand for ‘Fighting Whities’ merchandise.”
