Why is “respect” always a one-way street?
“Riverview High School in Coxheath, N.S., is dropping the Redmen name from its hockey program in an effort to be more ‘culturally respectful’. The name was chosen almost 50 years ago because of the colour of the team’s jersey and candy cane socks, and did not refer to ‘indigenous’ {they mean ‘aboriginal’} people, said an official with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education (CBVRCE).
“At that time, ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} community leaders were consulted and approved the name {!}…
“Grade 12 student Mitchell Doucette wasn’t sure how he felt about the decision Wednesday.
“When my mom told me this morning, I was kind of surprised because … I’ve never thought anything of it … I just thought Redmen, the school colours were red. That’s all I thought“,
he said…
“Discussions about the rebranding have been going on for some time, he said, but they were sped up earlier this year when Montreal’s McGill University decided to drop the name Redmen from its men’s varsity sports teams.”

“The Copper Cliff Minor Hockey Association {Sudbury, Ont.} will be changing its long-time name and logo for the upcoming hockey season. After 85 years, the team will no longer be called the Copper Cliff Redmen and the logo — which resembles the Chicago Blackhawks logo — will also be changed.
“It’s difficult to historically change after 85 years being something and now we’re moving into a different chapter, we’re not going to forget about that chapter because, you know, our rep program was built on that name and we’re not going to forget about it“,
said Leo Verrilli, the director of the hockey association.
“He says the association decided to make the change about 18 months ago and began looking into names and logos that were not insensitive toward ‘indigenous’ {he means ‘aboriginal’} peoples…
“Earlier this year, the Ontario ‘Human Rights’ {except for ‘whites’} Commission sent letters to 40 municipalities across the province, asking mayors
“to engage ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} communities about the use of ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’}-themed logos and team names in their sports arenas.” …

“The deliberately provocative intent was to make a mascot of ‘white’ people for a change, and see how they liked it. But ‘white’ people did like it.
