‘The Marxist Who Triggered Canada’s Graves Fiasco’

To be part of decolonizing academe, be part of ‘Indigenizing’ our pedagogy and where we are today. Playing a very small role in that, for me, is what makes me able to get up every morning and do it again tomorrow.Critical archaeologists thus take part in an emancipatory archaeology to serve marginalized societal groups and challenge the dominant class. Neutrality is a luxury that archaeologists are not afforded and they cannot be apolitical in the face of politics.

“Five years of national angst and anger over the “discovery” of “graves” at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School was driven by an archaeological report by a self-proclaimed activist archaeologist and ‘critical {Marxist} theory’ advocate, Sarah Beaulieu. Her PhD thesis, completed in 2019, glorified her ‘social warrior’/critical theory credentials.

https://summit.sfu.ca/item/19386

“It was Beaulieu who identified the “soil disturbances” that got conflated as “graves” and even “a mass grave” near the site of the former Kamloops residential school in May, 2021.

“In her thesis, “Archaeology of Internment at the Morrissey WWI Camp”, insight into Beaulieu’s philosophy is revealed in Chapter Two under the headings “Critical Theory” and “Applications of Critical Theory within Modern Conflict Archaeology”.

“Critical theory, she explained, has a dual purpose: exposing ideologies (or regimes/governments) that justify oppression, and forcing a commitment from the “practitioner” (in this case, Beaulieu) to act against the oppression once it has been exposed.

Through the application of critical theory, researchers gain an understanding of how certain groups have become exploited. This ‘understanding’ allows the researcher to use this knowledge and critique gained through research to strive to end such oppressive forces”,

wrote Beaulieu, a professor at Fraser Valley University.

{Pure Marxist praxis: ‘Praxis’ is the defining Marxist concept of the dialectical relationship between theory and practice. It goes beyond mere action or implementation, representing the continuous, repeating cycle of analyzing societal structures (theory) and actively engaging in transformative, revolutionary action to change them (practice).The fundamental goal of praxis is to resolve social contradictions and emancipate society from oppressive modes of living. It is most famously summarized in the eleventh of Karl Marx’s “Theses on Feuerbach”… }

Critical archaeologists thus take part in an emancipatory archaeology to serve marginalized societal groups and challenge the dominant class.”

“‘Emancipatory archaeology’ and activism are one and the same thing, according to Beaulieu. She isn’t just an archeologist doing her job, she is the force through which change is made.

Emancipatory (activist) archaeology aims, through its conceptual frameworks and public outreach initiatives, to foster critical thought about the determinants of contemporary lived experience in hopes of impelling positive social change

she wrote in her thesis, two years before the 2021 Kamloops “findings”.

“Beaulieu makes no apologies about taking sides.

Neutrality is a luxury that archaeologists are not afforded and they cannot be apolitical in the face of politics”,

she wrote.

“She added,

Creating an ethically engaged archaeology” places “the needs of the victims, local and descendant communities first.

{What about putting professionalism first? Were you never taught that??}

“For Beaulieu, a public accounting was also very much needed.

Archaeologists share a responsibility not only to uncover the criminal acts of the perpetrators and bring justice to the victims but also to call to public attention such atrocities”,

she wrote.

“At one point, Beaulieu talked about how victims of war often have their stories re-written by different governments and of the need to challenge that oppression.

Intrinsic to war are the transgressors and victims whose historical narrative is often re-written through the lens of shifting political regimes. Hence, the need to speak out against such injustices becomes the onus of society, and the field of archaeology can thus greatly contribute to ‘social justice’.

It is this knowledge that will enlighten society so that it may rise up against historical, ongoing and future injustices.”

“Some have pointed out that five years later, there are still no bodies unearthed, but Beaulieu predicted this, as well. In fact, she said, in her 2019 thesis, excavations might never take place in such circumstances.

By default, excavations on sites of conflict often organically evolve into community archaeology projects, providing oversight and authority to the witnesses and survivors. This can also lead to the prevention of an excavation from taking place”,

she wrote.

Beaulieu cited the Argentinian case of the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, mothers and families of victims of the military dictatorship, who refused to allow the excavation and recovery of their deceased family members

in an effort to keep the political struggle alive, since ‘therapeutic closure can also mean political closure’.”

{Like Kamloops?}

“In a 2023 podcast with Fraser Valley University’s community health and social innovation hub, Beaulieu expounded on her views, saying that “non-‘Indigenous’ Canadians from {mythological} Turtle Island’” had misunderstood the science.

When the news in Kamloops broke, one of the things that was really in the forefront was this notion that we had used science. For some reason, whatever reason, with non-‘Indigenous’ Canadians from ‘Turtle Island’, the idea that, you know, we are able to name names of the children or have actual numbers of the children that went missing means more than the actual stories, oral histories that came from the ‘Indigenous’ communities that have been talked about for generations.

{Yes, of course it does!!!}

And for me, it’s important that we are upholding and raising these oral traditions and stories, it’s important that the protocols, these traditions, are upheld and are equal to the science, the science we are using behind GPR (ground-penetrating radar).

{Then you’re NOT a ‘scientist’! And Marx would have regarded your statement as foolish nonsense, so you’re a poor excuse for a Marxist, as well…}

“Interpretation of the results was also left to the community, she said.

It is important to be invited into the community to conduct research that is important to them. And for me that means, as an outsider, that everything from conducting a survey, to preparing a report, to the interpretation of the results, to the review of the report needs to be run by the community itself. It’s not for me.”

{And what training do they have to be able to ‘interpret’ the results???}

“Beaulieu also said that “decolonizing{‘dumbing down’} education wasn’t enough, it needed to go further with “Indigenizing”, raising up {so-called} ‘Indigenous knowledge’.

“Giving voice to “marginalized communities” was ‘cleansing’, she said.

Being able to be part of the reconciliatory process, to be part of decolonizing academe, be part of ‘Indigenizing’ our pedagogy and where we are today. Playing a very small role in that, for me, is what makes me able to get up every morning and do it again tomorrow.

“Are there graves at the Kamloops site? Does Beaulieu’s report show “anomalies” that could be graves, or just old septic pipes as National Post colleague Tristin Hopper recently reported? We may never know because the report is being kept secret.

“Following Kamloops, Canada has given almost $250 million to ‘First Nations’ {Aboriginal tribes/Bands} to hunt for bodies,

https://www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca/eng/1757707275544/1757707296566

all based on an archaeological report — that the federal government paid for and that has never been made public — from a ‘social justice’ {Communist} activist who seems to believe that her mission is mostly about fighting oppression.

“It’s long past time that the report was made public, and the Carney ‘Liberals’ should commit to doing so before any more money is paid out.”

Dr. Sarah Beaulieu, a University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) anthropologist, presented a summary of her ground penetrating radar (GPR) investigation to media Thursday morning at an event held by Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc ‘First Nation’, highlighting 200 “targets of interest” of what are likely to indicate human burials.

The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc ‘First Nation’ {a ‘nation’ of 1,642 people} have identified Beaulieu as a collaborating researcher whose work confirmed the probable {?} unmarked graves on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School (KIRS).

Beaulieu emphasized that remote sensing such as GPR is not the only means of knowing children went missing in Indian Residential School contexts. Beaulieu added that this fact has been recognized by ‘Indigenous’ {sic} communities for generations, and that remote sensing provides specific coordinates to this ‘truth’.

Beaulieu, a specialist in ‘conflict archaeology’ {?}, joined Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Chief Rosanne Casimir, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Legal Council, KIRS ‘survivors’ and other experts at the virtual and in-person gathering at the Coast Kamloops Hotel & Conference Centre.

My findings confirmed what Elders had shared”, {Not true}

Beaulieu said after the event.

It’s an example of science playing an affirming role of what the Knowledge Keepers already recognized.

Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Knowledge Keepers shared their stories with Beaulieu during her GPR field work at the former KIRS site in late May.

As these heartbreaking ‘realities’ are revealed {?}, while we offer our deepest sympathies to ‘Indigenous’ communities across this land, we understand that condolences are not enough”,

said Dr. Martha Dow, director of UFV’s Community Health and Social Innovation (CHASI) Hub.

Dr. Beaulieu’s work sheds light on ‘these historical truths’ {?} that continue to have real impact today, and contributes to the critical work outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Report.”

Beaulieu is in UFV’s Social, Cultural and Media Studies department, is a Faculty Associate with CHASI, and is “keenly attentive to the coexistence of voice with silence and agency with marginalization”,

said Dow.

That and her commitment to community-led processes is truly inspiring to her colleagues and students.”

Beaulieu notes that she is not the only archaeologist collaborating on the important task of identifying unmarked graves at residential schools.

{We should hope not, as tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money has been provided for that purpose!}

A lot of people are working to fulfill the call to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that says we need to do this work”,

she said.

I was the one on the ground in Kamloops but I am part of a community fulfilling this mission.”
