‘Now All They Have To Do Is Threaten To Protest’

“The provincial government has postponed a ceremony to unveil a new name for a bridge over the Trans-Labrador Highway, just a few hours before the event was to get underway. The postponement of Tuesday’s event came as plans for a protest ramped up Tuesday morning ahead of the event…

Innu ‘Nation’ has a right to be consulted. This needs to be recognized and supported“,

read a tweet by Innu ‘Nation’, just minutes after government announced the event wouldn’t happen…

“The bridge, about 75 kilometres south of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, was set to be known as the ‘Leslie S. Chubbs Memorial Bridge’.

“Late Monday night, Jack Penashue — a longtime ‘Innu rights’ activist and executive director of the Charles J. Andrew Youth Treatment Centre — said on Facebook that there should have been consultations on the name of the bridge.

I for one am not supportive of this naming of a bridge … on Innu land. I have nothing against Mr. Chubbs, and his family. I’m sure he was a [decent] and hard-working man. But to name something on Innu lands/territory is being disrespectful to my grandparent’s territory“,
he wrote.
{It may have been your “grandparent’s territory” but it’s NOT yours! And YOU are the one being “disrespectful”…}

The ceremony was postponed directly due to that criticism raised by the Innu ‘nation’, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation and Works confirmed to CBC. The department will review the concerns before rescheduling the event.

Mr. Chubbs was a longtime, dedicated department employee and an advocate for transportation in Labrador who helped plan and construct the Trans-Labrador Highway“,
reads a statement from government…”

“The Innu, formerly known as the Naskapi-Montagnais Indians, are an Algonkian-speaking people whose homeland (Nitassinan) is the eastern portion of the Quebec-Labrador peninsula. The word “Innu” means “human being“, and the Innu language is called “Innu-aimun“. Today there are over 16,000 Innu who live in eleven communities in Quebec and two in Labrador.

“The two Labrador communities are Sheshatshiu, where Grand Lake (Kakatshu-utshishtun) meets Lake Melville (Atatshuinipeku), and Davis Inlet (Utshimassit) on an island off the north coast of Labrador…

“Together, the two communities form the Innu ‘Nation’ which represents the Innu people of Labrador to the wider world…”

Davis Inlet, August 1903 – Innu traders gathered outside the Hudson’s Bay Company post in Davis Inlet, Labrador.

“In 2002, the Innu ‘Nation’ successfully lobbied the federal government to be recognized as ‘Status Indians’, giving them access to various federal programs and services under the Indian Act. The communities of Natuashish and Sheshatshiu, both located in Newfoundland and Labrador, were established as reserves in 2003 and 2006 respectively…”
