‘Lollipop, Lollipop’

“A West Edmonton Mall candy shop has removed a statue of an ‘indigenous’ man wearing a headdress made of lollipops, following complaints it was an inappropriate use of a ‘sacred’ object. Jacki Zahariuk, manager of ‘Bubble and Gum’, said mall administration contacted the store owner after receiving a complaint and he told her to take it away.

It’s a native statue and there are lollipops for the feathers in his headdress”,
Zahariuk said Monday.
I have been told to move it and it’s no longer in front of my store … It (is) in a backroom.”

“The store opened June 27. The statue had been on display in the shop for the last two weeks, but was moved to the front of the store Saturday, Zahariuk said. A man complained in person and a woman {Montana Courts} posted photos on Facebook, describing it as inappropriate and unacceptable…

To me, if it’s a sacred image, why would they make it? It was brought in from the States. It’s a native guy. He has a peace pipe and tomahawk and bow and arrow”,
Zahariuk said.
It’s a beautiful piece.”

The ‘Aboriginal Narrative’, from a partial aboriginal…
“Montana Courts saw the display, a statue of an ‘indigenous’ man wearing a headdress made with lollipops, at ‘Bubble and Gum’ on Sunday.

I was appalled that someone had thought that it [was] okay“,
the recent university graduate told ‘HuffPost Canada’ in a message.
As a Métis person, I was offended by it.” …

It was important for me to speak up because, while it might seem like a little thing, it’s a ‘microaggression’ that’s a part of a larger problem“,
Courts told ‘HuffPost Canada’.
We have our missing and murdered sisters, a large homeless population, higher incarceration rates, and so on. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes, in addition to being disrespectful about our sacred objects.”

“Manager Jacki Zahariuk said that “everybody loves” the statue and it sells lots of lollipops…”

COMMENT: “I am ‘indigenous’, and this is the most ridiculous claim of racism that I have seen to date! You should rather be proud that a monumental figure of our heritage is standing proud at a candy store or anywhere else. It’s a part of your Canadian Heritage! You should have just shut your trap and bought a f’in sucker!”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
“Let me get this straight, Montana sees a display at a store and it offends her. Just another case of some nosy person getting upset at something that has absolutely nothing to do with her. You are probably as ‘indigenous’ as I am Hispanic. Let’s rename bridges, remove statues and try to erase history because it offends a few individuals. Let’s not build a pipeline because a vocal minority doesn’t want it. Let’s all vote for a politician because even though they absolutely suck at what they do….they are really cool on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Heheheh…..Millennials.”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
“Nothing hurtful about this to me! At least someone is displaying something about our culture! They’re f’n lollipops!”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
“Its cool. Why is it offensive.?? I’m native and i want one of the suckers. Like, really. Let’s call cbc aptn cnn. 😂”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
“If you are so easily offended that a candy holder offends you because it looks like a sacred item, get some help, I’m native but i don’t put such meaning in certain objects that i appropriate everything that isn’t doing any harm to anyone. Was the object physically harming you? If not, then shut up… Honestly, no one cares what sacred item it is; we live in such a diverse nation that we will share culture. If you don’t like it, then stay on your reserves.”
