‘Rebuilding The Tower of Babel’

The greatest barrier between people is language and the Government of Canada isn’t doing anyone any favours – particularly aboriginals – by erecting more barriers, none of which will help aboriginal youth find success in the modern world:

“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government will introduce an ‘Indigenous’ {‘Siberian settler’} Languages Act’ in hopes of preserving and revitalizing ‘First Nations’, ‘Metis’ and Inuit languages in Canada.”

“…When a language dies it means the extinction of a culture, and when a culture is lost, part of our humanity is lost and our ability to adapt to the world around us diminishes”.
–Wade Davis, ‘CBC Massey Lectures 2009’ – ‘Ideas’, November 2-6, 2009

“This view relies on a major misconception – the confusion of cultural with biological diversity (a confusion discussed in “Disrobing the Aboriginal Industry”… See below).

“Because biology is rooted in genetics and is relatively unchangeable, biological diversity is beneficial by ensuring that lifeforms can survive environmental shocks. Culture, on the other hand, can change very quickly, and it can be transformed to aid survival. Perpetuating pre-literate languages that are spoken by only a few people does nothing to enhance the current survival of humanity, which requires the intense interaction and cooperation that is facilitated by a common language.”

Not only is there the obvious observation that these languages would have been maintained by the tribes themselves, had they served any practical utility, but there’s also the faulty argument that rationalizes this reactionary legislation and the funding that will most assuredly follow:

“…The increasing influence of postmodern relativism in the field of linguistics propagates the myth of aboriginal languages having the same communication capacity as modern European languages. While linguists were originally scientists who devoted themselves to the study of languages, they now function as {well-paid} advocates promoting aboriginal language preservation, and demand funding on this basis. {The same transformation that has occurred in the former science of ‘Anthropology’.}

“Such a concern about “language loss”…is manifest in the ‘Canadian Linguistics Association’… The organization has created a ‘Committee on Aboriginal Languages’…

“But the study of various languages is not the same thing as advocating their preservation and revitalization… There is also no evidence to support the commonly-made assertion put forward to support language preservation – that the disappearance of languages is detrimental to the survival of humanity.

The argument relies on a confusion of cultural and biological diversity, as well as a denial of cultural evolution. It is erroneously assumed that linguistic diversity is similar to biological diversity. The comparison is faulty, since languages are a part of culture and can be dramatically transformed even within a single generation…

The retention of linguistic diversity, in fact, creates communication barriers within our species, thwarting human understanding and cooperation… Dependence on exogenously-imposed efforts is artificial, and illustrates the redundancy of pre-literate languages.

The attempts to preserve aboriginal languages only serves the interests of the linguists of the ‘Aboriginal Industry’; they are a disservice to native people.
