‘There Is Already Help Available…’

Aboriginal activists and their ‘allies’ are currently shutting down INAC offices in Toronto, Regina and Winnipeg {offices that provide services to aboriginal people}, and are acting like there is no help available for struggling aboriginals. It’s not like there aren’t already government programs in place {These are in addition to the programs offered to all Canadians}:

“CTV News has compiled this list of resources that are available for ‘First Nations’ people dealing with potentially life-threatening health and mental health issues.

‘National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program’
{Had a 5-year budget, as of 2012, of $35.5 million}
“The National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP) and NYSAP make up a network of programming that includes:
–’First Nations’ addiction treatment centres
–NNADAP community-based prevention programs

“The federal government program helps fund ‘First Nations’ and Inuit-run initiatives to help communities deal with addiction issues. A list of local treatment centres can be found here:

‘Brighter Futures’
{Building Brighter Futures – Budget 2015 time-limited funding in 2016-2017: $5,000,000}
“The community-based program provides a wide range of mental health initiatives, including: information sessions on issues such as depression, family violence and stress management; counselling services; and wellness and recreational activities.

“The ‘Brighter Futures’ program and the ‘Building Healthy Communities’ program were introduced in the early 1990’s (1992 and 1994 respectively) to assist ‘First Nations’ and Inuit communities to develop community-based approaches to better health.

“Currently, THE MAJORITY of ‘First Nations’ and Inuit communities receive ‘Brighter Futures’ and/or ‘Building Healthy Communities’ program funding.

“The Brighter Futures program is a community-based health promotion and ill-health prevention program for ‘First Nations’ and Inuit communities. The program typically promotes health and prevents ill-health through learning-related activities that strive to increase awareness, change attitudes, build knowledge and enhance skills.”

‘Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program’
{2010 federal budget allocated $65.9 million over two years}
“The government program offers mental health and emotional support to all former residential school students. Psychologists and social workers are available for individual and family counselling, while local Aboriginal organizations offer cultural and emotional support. The program can also be contacted on its 24-hour national crisis line at 1-8666-925-4419.”

Then, there was this, from the last Conservative budget:

“‘First Nation’ mental health services also get $2 million in ongoing funding, beginning in 2016-2017…”

Also, there are all of the provincial medical programs for aboriginals, including mental health.

In B.C., there’s the segregated ‘First Nations’ Health Authority’. All provincial responsibilities for ‘aboriginal health’ were transferred to it and it’s 2015/2016 budget was $460 million {with no ‘mental health’ numbers}, most of it coming through ‘Health Canada’:
