“Harry reached out to ‘The New Westminster Times’ following our story about veteran Powell River paramedic Ted Vizzutti, drummed out of his job after 39 years and called “racist” by BC Emergency Health Services for opposing his City’s proposed name change.

“Paramount is the respect for and appreciation of each other’s diverse backgrounds”.
“If Harry is any indication, Tla’amin respect for people outside their community has dwindled to near zero.

“Democracy has nothing to do with ‘First Nations’ or ‘Indigenous’ culture”,
L. Maynard Harry, former Tla’amin Chief and four-time elected councillor…told The New Westminster Times in a recent 90-minute phone interview (that was recorded with permission).
“It’s an alien system.”
“Meanwhile, elected officials of the Tla’amin ‘First Nation’ are sending mixed messages about their commitment to democracy. On one hand, a spokesperson for the Tla’amin ‘First Nation’ told The New Westminster Times that only elected officials may speak publicly for their community.
“On the other hand, those same democratically-elected officials oppose a democratic process relating to a possible name change for the City of Powell River.

“The ‘Nation’ {sic} doesn’t support opinion polls or referenda because the ‘human rights’ of a minority should not be decided by a majority”,
said the Tla’amin statement.
“As previously reported in a recent story, Harry said in his interview with The New Westminster Times that “White people are subhuman”.
“Harry, who used the word “subhuman” fifteen times in the course of the interview, described “White people” generally as inferior to ‘Indigenous’ people.
“When I use the word subhuman, I mean the viciousness about who White people are, and the corporate people that come into my community and take advantage just to access land, valuable land and resources {For which, you are generously paid}. That’s what I mean”,
said Harry.
“Subhuman in general.”

“Despite the Tla’amin reluctance to adopt the “alien system” that Harry describes, democratic processes have nevertheless now been firmly entrenched in the life of the ‘First Nation’ {sic, Tribe} through its own constitution. The Tla’amin Constitution was a prerequisite to the “Tla’amin Final Agreement”, a modern treaty with the Province of British Columbia that went into effect in 2016.
{NO Treaties with Aboriginals can be considered ‘Modern’. The whole process is an anachronism…}
“Contrary to the above-referenced public statement on the name-change poll stating the Tla’amin Nation “doesn’t support opinion polls or referenda”, the Tla’amin Constitution fully integrates and supports the use of referenda in Tla’amin decision-making on a “50 percent plus one” basis. No special provisions are provided for “the human rights of a minority”.
