This is a story of political cowardice – something all too prevalent in Canada where Aboriginals are concerned. Our story begins with:
“In the Village of Chase on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake in the mountainous eastern region of the South Thompson River Valley, {Aboriginal} residents are pushing back against local government after councillors shut down a motion to paint an ‘Every Child Matters’ crosswalk in recognition of ‘Orange Shirt Day’.
“The proposal to commemorate residential school ‘survivors’ {The pejorative term for ‘former students’}, which would cost the municipality $625, was defeated at a Sept. 12 council meeting after two councillors voted against the idea…”

Then, after Aboriginal pressure was applied:
‘Village of Chase changes course, approves ‘Every Child Matters’ project’
“Around twenty members of the community joined the meeting… The opposition to the symbolic crosswalk was drowned out by several people who stood to say they were “appalled” council would deny the opportunity both to commemorate victims and ‘survivors’ of the Indian residential school system and strengthen its ties with three neighbouring ‘Indigenous’ communities.
{Aboriginals are ‘Indigenous’ to Siberia and Mongolia.}
“The now-approved crosswalk is expected to be similar to the one in downtown Kamloops, which is painted orange with black feathers…
“Coun. Collin Connett Connett gave the sole opposing vote, frustrated…by hecklers from the gallery. He stood by his suggestion that a mural would be a better option.
“I’ve never heard any discussion with this whatsoever, we’ve never had one meeting with this. Maybe you guys have had a bloody meeting, but we haven’t. Now we look like a bunch of prized pricks“, {That’s for sure – cowardly pricks…}

“It’s not clear exactly where it will be, or when it will be painted.”
