‘Indigenizing Canadian Courts, One Feather At A Time’

The irony in this is that far more aboriginals listed themselves in the 2011 Census as ‘Christian’ than as ‘traditional spirituality’. So, this is simply tokenism catering to a minority of traditionalists:

“‘Indigenous’ {they mean ‘aboriginal’} people will soon be able to give their testimony in Manitoba courts after swearing their oath on an eagle feather. A ceremony to mark the introduction of eagle feathers into every provincial courtroom was held Thursday morning at the ‘Oodena Celebration Circle’ at The Forks in Winnipeg. The feathers were blessed at a sunrise ceremony, featuring smudging and a prayer.

“This is a historical moment for us, to see our way of life being accepted into the courts like this“,

said Michael Pierre, who works with the ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} spiritual caregivers at Manitoba Justice…

“People can swear or affirm affidavits using an eagle feather — rather than swearing on the Bible — or they can hold one while giving testimony.
“Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal said the provincial court system is accepting the 40 feathers ‘with humility’ {?}… The ceremony was witnessed by ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} elders, pipe carriers and ‘warriors’, as well as provincial ‘justices’…”

“The Nova Scotia courts took a step towards {one-way} ‘reconciliation’ Thursday as ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} people attending court now have the option to take legal affirmation with a ‘sacred’ eagle feather. Sacred feathers were presented to the court by members of the Mi’kmaq community at a ceremony that was attended by chiefs, Elders and Nova Scotia chief ‘justices’…

“The feather can be held or placed in front of a person while testifying. They are also allowed to bring their own feather with them…

“Nova Scotia Chief Justice Michael MacDonald said the ‘colonial system’ has problems and it’s time to look at the Mi’kmaq approach to justice…
{? And this is the CHIEF JUSTICE? SERIOUSLY?? He sounds more like an Aboriginal Industry employee…}

“The implementation of the eagle feather is part of the process of the Nova Scotia courts to be more ‘inclusive’ and relevant to the ‘indigenous’ {‘aboriginal’} community…

“Eagle feathers are also used in Ontario courts…”
