‘More Divisive CBC Propaganda’

The CBC continues to do its utmost to create racial division and resentment in Canada. Daily stories about Attawapiskat never mention the massive reserve corruption that is at the root of their problems {See links below}. Instead, it’s all Canada’s fault. In this story, they even mention the St. Anne’s Residential School’s “electric chair” — a story that was long ago debunked as fiction. Shame…:

“Ontario ‘First Nation’s residents have faced an endless crisis since signing Treaty 9 in 1905, says elder.”

“Eight-year-old Marcey Wesley says it makes her sad she can’t play with water balloons this summer. The tap water in the Ontario ‘First Nation’ {aboriginal reserve} of Attawapiskat isn’t safe. It has high levels of a chemical byproduct produced by the chlorination process in the community’s ailing water plant that needs millions of dollars in repairs. Residents have been told to limit their use of tap water, which means summer games with garden hoses will have to wait until next year… Her mother, Georgina Wesley, said she has never known a day in Attawapiskat when she could drink tap water…

“John Edwards, an elder, was one of the children from Attawapiskat who were sent to St. Anne’s Indian residential school, which was south, along the coast, in Fort Albany. St. Anne’s has become one of the most notorious institutions to emerge from the era of residential schools. A homemade electric chair was used on students…”

{“Misinformation on the so-called “electric chair“, ostensibly at St. Anne’s rez school. It was nothing of the sort. It was a Van de Graaff static electricity generator used to teach kids about static electricity. The wooden chair children sat on was to provide insulation from the charge of electricity that made their hair stand on end. Small Van de Graaff generators are built by hobbyists and are simple mechanical devices, often built in science classes. Not torture devices.”

Not Again???
“Former Attawapiskat chief Theresa Spence says she is embarking on another hunger strike, this time over the state of her community’s water and infrastructure, along with its ongoing social struggles… Spence began the current hunger strike with Attawapiskat Band Coun. Sylvia Koostachin-Metatawabin on Sunday at midnight…

“The statement from Spence and Koostachin-Metatawabin demands that senior ‘Indigenous’ {Aboriginal} Services Canada management with “budgetary and decision making authorities” meet with Attawapiskat on “major capital investment that encompasses not only with our water crisis, but also focusing on infrastructure and housing“. The statement said the community also needs commitments on dealing with child welfare, health, mental health and education, along with “the looming ‘genocidal’ encroachment” of resource development activities on {claimed} ‘traditional lands’.

“Danny Metatawabin, who was Spence’s spokesperson during ‘Idle No More’, said that Spence and Koostachin-Metatawabin are currently only drinking water…”

Money isn’t Attawapiskat’s problem{April 23, 2016}:
“Diamond company ‘DeBeers’ already pays the Attawapiskat council nearly $3 MILLION A YEAR for a town of under 2,000 people. Five years ago, DeBeers gave the community 22 housing units after former Chief Theresa Spence declared a housing emergency. The mining company has also done over $350 MILLION in business with companies at Attawapiskat since 2006. Ottawa sends the community another $18 MILLION OR MORE A YEAR, plus more for new houses. Then, there is the million or more from the Ontario government and a similar amount from a revenue-sharing agreement for proceeds from aboriginal casinos in southern Ontario. It’s not uncommon for the Attawapiskat council to receive $30 MILLION ANNUALLY, or somewhere around $18,000 per resident.”

Attawapiskat Again{July 9, 2019}:
The ongoing dysfunction of the Attawapiskat reserve has it back in the news again:
“The Attawapiskat Band council in northern Ontario has declared a state of emergency after tests showed tap water had potentially harmful levels of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs)… A spokesperson for ‘Indigenous’ {‘Aboriginal’} Services Minister Seamus O’Regan, Kevin Deagle…said the department has spent about $1.4 million on the community’s water system since 2018…”

Moving is the only hope’ (Remote Reserves) {June 23, 2016}:
Institutional racism continues to not only exist, but is expanding in Canada. One of its ugly manifestations is the segregated ‘reserve’ system; yet, whenever Canada attempts to move forward on this issue, it is stifled by reactionary tribal leadership:
“The Assembly of ‘First Nations’ regional Chief for Ontario blasted former ‘Liberal’ Prime Minister Jean Chretien for suggesting some northern ‘First Nations’ may have no other hope left except to move away…”

“Carrying hand-drawn signs declaring, “Our Kids Matter, Water is Life” and, “Our People are Dying Slowly,” dozens of Attawapiskat residents marched through their community Tuesday to press for an end to the Ontario ‘First Nation’s long-standing water problems.”
