‘Did Aboriginals Copyright Totem Poles?’

Decades ago, some Canadian children made a totem pole in honour of the chief that their school was named after, but because they weren’t aboriginal and didn’t have the permission of certain West coast tribes, the pole must now come down…

“A totem pole that has stood in the foyer of a Chatham school for 45 years will be removed because it’s “culturally inappropriate”, the Lambton Kent school board says.

“Created by students in the early 1970s as a tribute to Tecumseh, a prominent ‘indigenous’ leader killed near Moraviantown in the ‘War 1812’, the pole will be taken out of Tecumseh public school in the summer…

“Members of the ‘Tecumseh Secondary School Alumni Association’ had lobbied the board to keep the tribute.

I’m frustrated, but not surprised”,

Dan Foster, a member of the association, said Tuesday. The board sent out its news release before notifying the association, he said.

“He accused the board of acting in bad faith, adding a commitment was made during a recent school transition committee meeting that the board would contact the alumni association prior to making a final decision…

“But Jim Costello, education director of the Lambton Kent school board, said he consulted with Superintendent Gary Girardi, who was at the last transition board meeting. He said the alumni association was told the board would work to return the totem pole to those who created it.

There was never any promise of consultation.”
{Only aboriginals get ‘consulted’…}

“In providing a rationale for its decision, the board cites its commitment to increasing students’ understanding of ‘indigenous’ histories and perspectives, particularly through the expansion of the ‘Contemporary Aboriginal Voices’ course, and professional development for staff.

“The board consulted with ‘indigenous’ communities on the West Coast {Why? Tecumseh had NOTHING to do with the West Coast, and West Coast aboriginals don’t get to dictate who makes a totem pole} and representatives of local ‘indigenous’ communities who said the totem pole is a symbol of ‘cultural appropriation’ and should be removed.

“The board also pointed out the totem pole was created as an “extra-curricular activity{So?}. Based on board records and reports by the students who created it, the totem pole was not commissioned by the school, nor the former Kent County board of education {So? That never mattered until now! Pathetic…}.

We now have greater understanding that it is ‘culturally inappropriate’ to keep the totem pole in the school {?}”,
Costello said.

COMMENT: “Everything and anything can be deemed culturally inappropriate it seems. Time to force everyone to dress in the attire of their ancestors, and only live in dwellings that hail from their “culture” from now on — after all, we wouldn’t want to offend anyone.”

“The fact of the matter is that full cultural appropriateness would eliminate many cultures from general sight and mind. Those who find insult in such innocent tributes to their culture and those who support them are bigots, doing far more harm than good.”

“Here’s where ‘Reconciliation’ becomes just another word for cultural bullying. At some point, there has to be a limit to aboriginal ‘sensitivities’. After all, ‘tolerance’ — like ‘reconciliation’ — is a TWO-way street…”

Poisoning Children’s Minds’ (Hallowe’en):
“The message my daughter got was that she could not pretend — could not even imagine herself — to be a Native person. She got the message that a barrier existed between herself and the “Native princess’ she wanted to be — the barrier of race. And nothing could surmount that barrier. Not even a child’s imagination.”

Offence is in the eye of the offended … or not‘ (‘Fightin’ Whities’):
“The deliberately provocative intent was to make a mascot of ‘white’ people for a change, and see how they liked it. But ‘white’ people did like it. Instead of taking offence, ‘whites’ embraced the name, to the extent of creating a huge demand for ‘Fighting Whities’ merchandise.”
