‘Pointless Apology Just Makes Things Worse’

All that yet another virtue-signalling, pointless apology has done is to stir up yet another fight about who is, and is not, Aboriginal, as people try and jump on the Aboriginal Industry gravy train:

“In a ceremony six years in the making, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey apologized in Cartwright, on Labrador’s southern coast, to residential school survivors {former students} and the ‘NunatuKavut’ people {some, not all, Labrador Inuit} on behalf of the provincial government.

{NunatuKavut is an unrecognized {unproven, former} Inuit territory in Labrador. The ‘NunatuKavut people’ claim to be the direct descendants of the Inuit that lived south of the Churchill or Grand River prior to European contact, with recent European admixture primarily from English settlers.”}

{That’s the same Inuit whose ancestors violently colonized Arctic Canada from coast to coast. See more below.}

“The treatment of NunatuKavut Inuit in residential schools represents a “tragic and sad chapter” in the province’s history, said Furey.

Today, with a heavy heart, I respectfully and humbly offer an apology to the students of NunatuKavut who attended residential schools in Newfoundland and Labrador“,

Furey said at the ceremony, held at the Cartwright Recreation Centre.

{ALL of them? Have they all claimed mistreatment?? You know that’s not true. And how can you apologize for something supposedly done long before you were born???}

As Premier, and on behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend this apology to the students, their families, and to the people of NunatuKavut. We are sorry.”

“Furey was joined by ‘Indigenous’ {sic} Affairs Minister Lisa Dempster and NunatuKavut community council President Todd Russell on Friday, the day before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The apology was promised by the Newfoundland and Labrador government in 2017, by then-Premier Dwight Ball.

“In Cartwright, where a residential school operated until 1964, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey praised survivors {former students’} strength and resilience and acknowledged his words don’t relieve their suffering — including sexual and physical abuse, and separation from their families.

{ALL attendees at Residential schools – 15% were non-Aboriginal – were separated from their families, not just Aboriginals. That’s why they’re called ‘Residential’ schools. And only a small percentage suffered abuse.}

We have a responsibility to acknowledge the past“,

Furey said.

{Including teaching them to read and write?

Would you have preferred they remain illiterate?}

When we look back at what {some} former students endured … we commend them for coming forward, for continuing to share their stories. Their bravery and resilience are a strength to all of us. Therefore, we make the solemn pledge that history is not forgotten, and must not be repeated.”

{Why don’t you want to hear all of the positive stories?

No political capital to be gained??}

“After sharing the apology, Furey said he hopes it can help people on their journey of healing — while acknowledging that his words could only do so much.

The tragedy of enduring separation from families and communities is something you live with every day“,

the Premier said.

{Again, ALL Residential school students – Aboriginal and otherwise – were separated from their families. The families brought them to the schools. Obviously, it was hard on children but how else to set up schools – 100 years ago or more – for tiny, scattered populations?}

My words here today do not suggest that an apology relieves the pain and suffering that you are all {?} enduring. However, by coming here today and expressing with complete sincerity that I am sorry, it is my wish that your journey of healing can truly continue.” {What are YOU sorry for?}

The NunatuKavut community council {claims to} represents about 6,000 Inuit in central and southern Labrador, but ‘Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami’, the {claimed} national representative organization for the Inuit in Canada, disputes NunatuKavut’s claims of Inuit identity. Earlier this week, the Nunatsiavut government and the Innu ‘Nation’ {Another disingenuously-named lobby group} took exception to the apology to NunatuKavut, while Furey said there will also be apologies made to the province’s other ‘Indigenous’ groups.”

“Arguments over Inuit identity have taken the forefront in Labrador, following the revelation that the provincial government plans an apology to residential school survivors in partnership with the NunatuKavut community council — a group that does not hold federal treaty rights.

Labrador’s two other ‘Indigenous’ groups are now calling for Newfoundland and Labrador’s ‘Indigenous’ Affairs Minister Lisa Dempster to resign or be fired.

“The Nunatsiavut government made a public plea for her resignation Wednesday afternoon and were joined hours later by the Innu ‘Nation’.

If Premier [Andrew] Furey or his government truly believes in reconciliation for ‘Indigenous’ peoples, they must begin to reconcile the harm to the true Inuit and Innu of Labrador by removing Lisa Dempster from her portfolio, immediately“,

said Innu ‘Nation’ Grand Chief Simon Pokue in a press release Wednesday evening.

“The province promised in 2017 to apologize to residential school ‘survivors’. The decision to do that in Cartwright, with only representatives from the provincial government and ‘NunatuKavut’ in attendance, has caused outrage among…Innu ‘Nation’, and…the Nunatsiavut government.

An apology to an unrecognized ‘Indigenous’ group in advance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an insult to ‘survivors’ and to Labrador Inuit“,

said Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe on Wednesday.

“The NunatuKavut community council says the backlash is uncalled for.

It’s quite egregious“,

NunatuKavut President Todd Russell said on Thursday.

The remarks are misleading, some border on lies and mistruths. They do not reflect history. They do not reflect reality. In my estimation, this is nothing short of crass politics and playing politics — baseless politics, harmful politics — with the lives of our people.”

“The dispute between recognized Inuit groups and NunatuKavut goes back to at least 1991, when a group called the Labrador Métis ‘Nation’ filed a land claim with the federal government.

“The claim was rejected by both the provincial and federal governments, but it became active again in 2010 when the group renamed itself the NunatuKavut community council. The council signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ with the federal government in 2019, laying the foundation for a path to ‘self-governance’.

“That angered the Nunatsiavut government and the Innu ‘Nation’. Both groups went to federal court to block the agreement from moving forward. Neither believes NunatuKavut is an ‘Indigenous’ collective.

“Russell was irate that the matter would be brought up during something as sensitive as a residential schools apology. He said his group catches flak from Nunatsiavut and the Innu ‘Nation’ each time it starts to make progress.

I think it is damnable that other ‘Indigenous’ people are out there condemning other ‘Indigenous’ people, just for the sake of greed“,

he said.

This is unacceptable. This is not the way of our ancestors.

“The premier said the decision to apologize to NunatuKavut wasn’t a snub to any other group. He intends to apologize to each of them individually, he said.

Someone has to take the first step“, {Why?}

he said.

This was a matter of timing and availability, and we hope we can continue the good working relationship we have with the [Nunatsiavut government] and the Innu towards recognizing their apologies, as well.”

“Furey said each group was responsible for drafting their own apologies {?}, and NunatuKavut finished first. He said the Nunatsiavut apology should be coming soon.

“The Innu ‘Nation’, meanwhile, said it doesn’t want an apology until after the inquiry into children in care is completed. It rejected an apology from the federal government in 2017, saying it was too narrow to focus only on schools.

“The NunatuKavut community council says it represents more than 6,000 Inuit in southern and central Labrador. One of those members is Lisa Dempster, the province’s minister of ‘Indigenous’ affairs. She also worked for the community council for 10 years as a career and employment counsellor.

“Both the Innu ‘Nation’ and Nunatsiavut say that places her in a conflict of interest.

Innu ‘Nation’ Grand Chief Simon Pokue (CBC)

“The Innu ‘Nation’ said this isn’t the first time the group has called for Dempster’s resignation.

Innu ‘Nation’, which represents the ‘First Nations’ communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish, has had long-standing concerns about Lisa Dempster’s behaviour, and in particular her conflict of interest, and has called for her removal as minister of ‘Indigenous’ affairs and reconciliation since February, 2021“,

reads their press release.

“Dempster’s office did not provide comment when contacted by CBC News about the calls for her dismissal…”

UPDATE:

This is what happens when you have ‘special’ Race rights for anyone who can claim ‘Aboriginality’. The money involved has become so enormous that there’s a scramble to get on board – and infighting over who qualifies.

Congratulations, Canada:

The Innu ‘Nation’ {a disingenuously-named Aboriginal Lobbying group} says it has notified Premier Andrew Furey that all Innu leaders in Labrador have withdrawn from his ‘Indigenous’ roundtable.

“In a press release issued Friday afternoon, the Innu ‘Nation’ expressed dissatisfaction with the way the provincial government is handling concerns over NunatuKavut and what it called “the conflict of interest and bias” of ‘Indigenous’ Affairs Minister Lisa Dempster.

This table is supposed to be a group comprised of provincial ‘Indigenous’ leaders. NunatuKavut community council (NCC) is not a recognized ‘Indigenous’ group“,

says a letter dated Oct. 18 and addressed to Furey.

We take exception to the sustained effort by the province to include NCC in dialogue about ‘Indigenous’ matters.”

“The NunatuKavut community council says it represents about 6,000 Inuit in central and southern Labrador, but Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the national representative organization for the Inuit in Canada, disputes NunatuKavut’s claims of Inuit identity. The Innu ‘Nation’ also doesn’t recognize the community council’s claims.

“The letter, signed by leaders from the Innu ‘Nation’, the Sheshatshiu Innu ‘First Nation’ {a ‘nation’ of 1,983 people} and the Mushuau Innu ‘First Nation’ {a ‘nation’ of 1,199 people}, accuses the premier’s office of failing to address concerns about Dempster’s “conflict of interest and evidence of her bias“.

The course of action appears to be to take no action and to dismiss the concerns of our people. This is disrespectful and unacceptable to Innu ‘Nation’ and our ‘First Nations’,”

the letter says.

“Dempster is a member of NunatuKavut.

“The premier’s roundtable included biweekly meetings with ‘Indigenous’ leaders, along with an annual face-to-face meeting involving ‘Indigenous’ shareholders, like friendship centres…”

Never Enough Apologies {June 18, 2019}:

“The Premier was foolish to promise this in the first place. They already received $50 million for going to school, and a Prime Ministerial apology. ENOUGH apologies!

Premier Dwight Ball has yet to keep his promise to apologize to residential school ‘survivors’ {former students} in Newfoundland and Labrador…

Now, It’s Inuit vs. Innu (Aboriginal ‘Legitimacy’) {Oct.29, 2019}:

“A re-elected ‘aboriginal’ ‘Liberal’ MP is still dodging a conflict of interest allegation, and it all has to do with the foolishness of trying to decide who’s ‘aboriginal’ and who is not, and who has ‘inherent rights’ on whose ‘traditional territory’. This time, it’s ‘Inuit’ vs, ‘Innu’. Race based categorization is a nonsense game and Canada continues to embarrass itself by playing along with this racist anachronism. Time to join the 21st century. End Race Based Law!”

Mea Maxima Culpa: The Ruse of Political Apologies (Gairdner):

It all seems a little bizarre, and a reversal of normal morality, which is…that ‘those who do harm must pay’. Instead, we, who did no harm, must apologize publicly for something over which we had no control, and politicians — who stand to gain by appearing morally upright — are extracting money from millions of citizens who were not even alive at the time, using it to pay off descendants who have suffered no harm, and whose only connection to the deemed sins of the past is their blood.

“The leader of a Metis {mixed-Race} lobbying organization masquerading as a ‘nation’, wants an apology for being taught to read and write – this time, from the Queen:

The president of the ‘Metis National Council’ says the Queen should apologize for residential schools to help ‘survivors’ {former students} and their families heal…

False Apologies and Unnecessary Payouts{Jan.21, 2020}:

“Less than one year ago, Prime Minister Justin (Junior) Trudeau made one of his patented ‘apologies’ — this one, to the Inuit, for Canada having sent them south to hospitals for tuberculosis treatment decades ago {See below}. As one T.B. survivor put it, “If you did not go south for treatment of TB, you died”.

Time To Ditch The Guilt (Flanagan):

For all Canadians who are carrying around guilt about what their ancestors — and not themselves personally — did to the Aboriginal peoples, please read this and then just let the guilt wash away:

It was not a contest between Indian cultures and European civilization, but rather one between Indian cultures and all the civilizations of the Old World taken together… The entry of Europeans into North America, as into Australia, was the last act of a great drama — the spread of agriculture around the world. Meanwhile, another play was being enacted as organized states extended their sway over stateless societies… Both of these processes are so prominent in human history that it seems almost beside the point to raise questions about morality…”
